Valentino @ Somerset House

This Sunday I had the pleasure to visit for second time stunning Somerset House, this time to see two amazing exhibitions: Valentino and Tim Walker.
I arrived just before 4 o'clock which meant that I luckily didn't have to queue up to go into the South Wing of the building to see the exhibition that celebrates 50 years of design by the "Master of Couture", Valentino. 
Este domingo tuve el placer de visitar el hermoso edificio de Somerset House por segunda vez, esta vez para ver dos exhibiciones increíbles: Valentino y Tim Walker.
Llegue justo antes de las 4 de la tarde, lo cual me permitió entrar sin tener que hacer colas en el ala sur del edificio para ver la exhibición que celebra 50 años de diseño del "Maestro de alta costura", Valentino.

Ever since its opening on 29th November, I hadn't stopped reading wonderful and flattering comments about this fashion retrospective all over the media. So, even though I always try to avoid reading any reviews on a movie, book or exhibition before even experiencing it myself, I couldn't help but to have extremely high expectations. 
Desde su inauguración el 29 de Noviembre, no para de leer maravillosas cosas acerca de esta retrospectiva de moda por todos lados: revistas, redes sociales y televisión. Así que, por mas que siempre trate de evitar leer criticas sobre películas, libros y exhibiciones antes de verlo con mis propios ojos, no pude evitar tener muy altas expectativas. 

I never was a person that spent too much time in museums, because, as much as I hate to admit it, I would simply get bored. But with time, I can say that I've matured and become to enjoy this sort of celebrations of art & culture. Therefore, I made sure that the £9 entry ticket (with concession, but £12.50 for the general public) was worth it; I made sure I took time to read and observe everything in extreme detail. 
When the clock strucked four, a heavy wave of enthusiastic people full of expectations filled every gap of the gallery. I felt like I was stuck in time while everything was going by extremely quickly in front of my eyes. But I didn't care. I wasn't there to have a quick look and go home. I wanted to understand the reason why Valentino was baptised the "Master of Couture". 
The first room was simple but imposing, the lighting was dim but it all contributed to draw you into the showcases with elements of the designer's past: from exquisite and detailed sketches to letters from acclaimed people showing their appreciation for him and intact invitations to past Valentino's fashion shows. 
Nunca fui una persona que pasó mucho tiempo en museos, por que por menos que me guste admitirlo, siempre me aburrían. Pero con tiempo, puedo decir que he ido madurando y ahora puedo disfrutarlos mas. Así que me aseguré que las £9 de entrada (con descuento de estudiante, sino cuesta £12.50) valiera la pena; me tomé mi tiempo para leer y observar todo con atención. 
Cuando el reloj marcó las 4, una fuerte ola de gente emocionada se escabulló y llenó la galería. Sentí como que todo estaba pasando muy rápido por delante de mis ojos, mientras yo estaba parada en el tiempo. Pero no me importó por que yo no estaba ahí para dar una vueltita e irme a mi casa. Quería entender porque Valentino fue bautizado el "Maestro de la alta costura".
El primer cuarto era simple pero imponente, la iluminación era baja pero todo contribuyo para atraer a la gente a las vitrinas con elementos del pasado del diseñador: desde exquisitos y detallados bocetos, hasta cartas escritas por gente reconocida aclamando al diseñador, e invitaciones intactas de desfiles de Valentino.

Going up the stairs, there was the main room, set up and acclimated as if it was a catwalk, were every person that walked over the grey carpet was the model of a luxurious and glamorous fashion show. After seeing the whole exhibition I gathered that this was meant to make the spectators "unique and confident" (Valentino) like the dresses he designed. 
Subiendo las escaleras se encontraba el cuarto principal, aclimatado para parecer una pasarela, sobre la cual cada persona que pasaba se podía sentir el modelo de un lujoso y glamoroso desfile de moda. Después de haber visto toda la exhibición me di cuenta que esto estaba hecho para hacer sentir a la gente "única y segura" (Valentino) como los vestidos que el diseñaba.

A selection of Valentino's most fabulous dresses could be found at each side of the 'catwalk', arranged by 'themes'. One of the critiques I have to make about this arrangement, is that in order to follow the numbers of the dresses (each mannequin was numbered and referenced in a booklet that each person received in the entrance), one had to constantly back and forth, making the 'tour' slightly confusing. However, having said that, one thing I thought was very clever was how the mannequins were colour coordinated according to the time each dress was made (e.g. Mint-1950s, Mustard-1960s, etc).

I can't stress enough how astounded I was to see the excess and luxury, and exquisite details each attire had using elements such as rhinestones, diamonds and pearls. What really caught my eye was the different techniques that the designer used in each piece, from tapetto di ruches, to drappegio and budellini to pieghe voltate. All very interesting, and most of them, things I'd never seen before. These techniques were all explained with text and videos in the next room downstairs. 

The exhibition concluded with "The Wedding Dress", worn by Marie-Chantal of Greece. A splendid white dress that summarised Valentino's 50 years of couture in one piece. 
Una selección de los vestidos mas fabulosos de Valentino se encontraban a cada lado de la 'pasarela', organizados tematicamente. Una de las criticas que tengo al respecto, es que para seguir la numeración de los vestidos (cada maniquí estaba numerado y referido en un librito que cada persona podia agarrar en la entrada), había que ir de aquí para allá constantemente haciendo que el recorrido fuera bastante confuso.
De todas formas, una cosa que me pareció muy interesante era como los maniquíes estaban pintados acorde a la época que cada vestido había sido hecho (ej. Menta-1950s, Mostaza-1960s, etc).
Quiero hacer hincapié en lo sorprendida que estaba al ver el exceso y lujo, y detalles exquisitos que llevaba cada atuendo, usando materiales como diamantes y perlas. Lo que mas me llamo la atención  fueron las innovadoras técnicas de costura usadas en cada vestido. Estas técnicas estaban todas explicadas en el cuarto de abajo, incluyendo una demostración por video. 
La exhibición concluyó con "El vestido de novia" de Marie-Chantal de Grecia. Un vestido esplendido que resumió los 50 años de Valentino en una sola pieza.

If you ask for my opinion? I think it's an exhibition that is worth visiting if you're interested in fashion and couture (the exhibition is on until 3rd March). However, I wish I'd gone there with no expectations, because I didn't find it as amazing as everyone had depicted it. Having said that, I have to say, the curators did a very good job, and I finally understand why they call Valentino the Master of Couture.

Si quiere saber mi opinión, creo que es una exhibición que vale la pena visitar si estas interesado en la moda (termina el 3 de marzo). De todas formas, desearía no haber tenido tantas expectativas, por que no me pareció tan increíblemente como la gente la había descripto. De todas formas, tengo que decir que los curadores hicieron un buen trabajo, y que finalmente entiendo por que le dicen "El Maestro de la Alta Costura" a Valentino.

Trend Forecasting: Inevitable Insularity

Hello everyone! I can finally say I'm done with all uni work for the year :) 
As promised, here's my final fashion forecasting project. The idea behind it was to do lots of research and be aware of what was going on around the world, and from this we had to pick one area and try to predict a future lifestyle and fashion trend.
Due to having my roots in Argentina, and having visited there over the summer, I decided to base my trend on this, in order to create a micro trend. After embarking a long journey of research and creative experimentation, I ended up coming up with the idea of "convertible clothes". The concept behind this idea was to have attires that are appropriate for different occasions and aimed at active, middle-class women in their mid 20s to mid 30s. I designed clothes that would be easy to deconstruct, amend or put away in little bags, transforming women's style in a matter of seconds in order for them to look good wherever they went (being it work, a work-related event or a bar with friends) without having to walk around everywhere with huge bags with all their clothes inside.

Hola a todos! Ya puedo decir que termine con todos los proyectos de este año en la universidad :)
Como lo había prometido, acá esta mi proyecto de predicción de tendencias. La idea detrás de este trabajo era informarnos de lo que estaba pasando en el mundo y elegir un aspecto en particular en el cual focalizarnos. Luego, teníamos que tratar de predecir una tendencia en base a este movimiento o serie de eventos. 
Dado el hecho de que tengo mis raíces en Argentina, y luego de haber visitado este país este invierno que paso, decidí basarme en lo que esta ocurriendo en este país para crear una microtendencia. Después de embarcarme en un gran proceso de búsqueda de información y experimentos artísticos, llegué a la idea de "ropa convertible". El concepto detrás de esta idea era crear ropa apropiada para distintas ocasiones, dirigidas a mujeres activas socialmente de clase media de 25 a 35 años. Me encargué de diseñar atuendos que fueran fácil de "deconstruir" (o desarmar), convertir o guardar en pequeñas bolsitas, transformando el estilo de la mujer en cuestión de segundos, dándoles la oportunidad de estar bien arregladas en cualquier ocasión (sea el trabajo, alguna reunión o evento laboral, o un bar con amigos) sin tener que caminar por todos lados con un bolso enorme lleno de ropa. 
Todo el razonamiento detrás de esta idea y una explicación mas detallada se encuentra en el reporte de tendencias que se encuentra abajo. (Como son fotos, entiendo que va a ser difícil leerlo, así que si están interesados, no duden en contactarme y les puedo mandar todo el trabajo).

London Graduate Fashion Week 2012

This post should of been done weeks ago, and it's probably completely irrelevant now, but I think that it's better to do things later than never.
Graduate Fashion Week took place from 9th-13th of June in Earl's Court 2, London. This is where fashion students from all across the country had the opportunity to show their innovative and prestigious collections, and had the chance to show the world what they were capable of.
I was lucky enough to be part of this experience on Monday 11th of June, where I was helping at the Front of House: greeting models and taking them backstage, directing people to their seats at the Northbrook College & Bournemouth fashion show and scanning passes that people from the industry carried. 

I wore: H&M silk tuxedo like trousers, New Look shirt with black bow, H&M black blazer and black Primark flats which then turned into New Look gold high heels to match my gold cuff. 

Tendría que haber hecho este posteo semanas atrás, y ahora probablemente es completamente irrelevante, pero mas vale tarde que nunca.
Graduate Fashion Week tomo lugar del 9 al 13 de Junio en Earl's Court 2 en Londres. Aqui es donde estudiantes de moda de todo Inglaterra tuvieron la oportunidad de mostrar sus innovadoras y prestigiosas colecciones, y demostrarle al mundo de lo que son capaces. 
Tuve la suerte de formar parte de esta experiencia el lunes 11 de Junio, ya que estuve ayudando ese día: recibiendo a los modelos y llevandolos al backstage, mostrandole los asientos a la gente que iba a ver el desfile de Northbrook College & la universidad de Bournemouth, y escaneando los pases de la gente de la industria. 

Going to GFW not only allowed me to see other people's work and give me ideas for the rest of my two years at university or even my future career, but I also had the chance to watch three different fashion shows: Lancashire University, Northbrook & Bournemouth and Nottingham Trent. I must say that despite all of them being really good, my favourite one was Lancashire. 

Habiendo ido a GFW no solo me dio la oportunidad de ver los trabajos de otras personas y darme inspiración para el resto de mis dos años en la universidad, y quizás hasta mi futura carrera, pero también me dio la chance de entrar a tres desfiles: Lancashire University, Northbrook & Bournemouth and Nottingham Trent. Tengo que admitir que por mas que todos estuvieron buenos, el que mas me gusto fue el de Lancashire.

Lancashire fashion show was filled with feminine, colourful and shocking womens and menswear. The show was predominated by sportswear, inspired by the Olympics taking place in London this year, with bold patterns and textures. The models walked down the catwalk to upbeat music, with voluminous, frizzy, curly and asymmetric hairstyles and eye catching make up.  
El desfile de Lancashire estuvo lleno de ropa de damas y caballeros con cortes y modelos femeninos, coloridos e innovadores. El show fue predominado por ropa deportiva con texturas y estampados atrapantes que llamaban la atencion. Los modelos caminaron por la pasarela al ritmo de musica movida y entretenida, con pelo voluminoso, enrulado y asimétrico, y maquillaje impactante. 

While Lancashire fashion show revealed a unified trend to a certain extent, Northbrook & Bournemouth one was more about diversity (to the extent that Bournemouth had a 65 year old woman modelling for them). Northbrook was all about high street designs with digitally generated bold patterns and darker, more conservative colours. Whereas Bournemouth was more simplistic and minimalistic. Pastels dominated the collections, as well as plain but oddly shaped clothes. One thing that stood out to me was a children collection where a few little girls modelled the clothes and people couldn't resist going "aw" while smiling (at least I know I couldn't). Models had natural and sleek hair styles and minimalistic make up, which allowed people to focus mainly on the clothes rather than the models. 
Mientras que el desfile de Lancashire demostro una tendencia mas unificada en cierto punto, el de Northbrook y Bournemouth se baso mas en la diversidad (hasta el punto que Bournemouth tenia una modelo de 65 años). Northbrook mostro diseños callejeros con estampados generados digitalmente y con colores mas oscuros y conservativos. Por otro lado, Bournemouth fue mas simplista y minimalista. Los pasteles predominaron, como tambien lo hicieron los cortes simples pero bizarros. Una de las cosas que mas me llamo la atención fue una colección de niños, la cual modelaron unas nenas chiquitas y la gente no pudo resistirse a sonreír mientras que exclamaban "aw" (al menos yo no pude). Modelos llevaron peinados naturales y maquillaje minimalista, que ayudaban a que la gente se focalizara mas en la ropa mas que en las modelos.

Finally, Nottingham Trent hosted an hour long show, which I thought was impressive but perhaps a bit too long. Designs were diverse but mainly futuristic, minimalistic and feminine. Colours varied between monochromatic and pastels. Layers, textures and cutouts were big, as well as simple lines and pale shades. Some of the clothes were very "out there", but others were rather sophisticated and conservative. Hair styles were sleek, and most girls had their hair up in buns or back with hair bands. What made the show so interesting was mainly the music and the lighting, which appealed to people's different senses making them live an incredible experience. 
Finalmente, Nottingham Trent dio un show de una hora, el cual pensé que fue impresionante pero quizás un poco muy largo. Diseños fueron diversos pero principalmente femeninos, futuristas y minimalistas. La paleta de colores vario entre monocromáticos hasta pasteles. Las capas, texturas y cortes predominaron, como también lo hicieron las lineas simples y tonos pálidos. Algunos de los diseños eran bastante bizarros, pero otros eran mas sofisticados y conservativos. Las modelos llevaban pelo lacio y engominado, y la mayoría tenían el pelo en rodetes o tirado para atrás con vinchas. Lo que hizo el show tan interesante fue principalmente la música y la iluminación, que envolvieron los sentidos de distintas personas haciendolas vivir una experiencia increíble.

On Friday 11^th of May, I submerged myself into the Design Museum near Tower Bridge in London to see the Christian Louboutin exhibition.

As I walked up the stairs of the Design Museum, I embarked in a circus of shoes, which welcomed me with an entrance with flashing lights which made me feel as if I was entering a cabaret.

El viernes 11 de Mayo, me sumergí en el Design Museum cerca del Tower Bridge en Londres para ver la exhibición de Christian Louboutin.

Subiendo las escaleras del museo, me embarqué en un circo de zapatos, que me dio la bienvenida con una entrada con luces haciendome sentir que estaba entrando en un cabaret.

Making my way through the corridors, a hint of sexy music running through my ears seduced me in, removing me from the noise of the big city and taking me into a whole different world.

The dim lighting hiding the black walls and the soft velvet red curtains created a mysterious atmosphere and the exhibition’s theme definitely portrayed the sensual essence of Louboutin’s shoes.

From Rolls Royce sky-high shoes to Guiness shoes (black shoes with Guiness cans heels) and artisanal shoes such as the Amelissa Maroc, Louboutin’s earliest designs I noticed how his life and surroundings highly influenced him to create these master pieces. 

As I walked into a little capsule which looked like the Eden Gardens, I found myself looking at some of his most recent and classic designs. This led people into a room displaying incredible glossy shoes on a big and round version of a piano. The mirrors around it lets me see the reflection of my astonished face, and I suddenly get a feeling of insecurity…I can’t help but feeling common and plain standing next to those pieces of art.

Caminando por los pasillos, empecé a escuchar una melodia sensual senduciendome a entrar, que me hizo olvidar de los ruidos de la gran ciudad y me hizo sentir que estaba entrando a un mundo completamente distinto.

Las tenues luces, las paredes negras y las suaves cortinas de terciopelo creaban un atmosfera misteriosa y la tematica de la exhibición definitivamente retrataron la escencia sensual de los zapatos Louboutin.

Desde altos zapatos Rolls Royce a zapatos Guiness y tacos artesanales como los Amelissa Maroc, los diseños mas antiguos del diseñador me hicieron dar cuenta de cuanta influencia saca de su vida cotidiana y las cosas a su alrededor.

Caminando hacia una pequeña cápsula que se parecía a los Jardines del Eden, me encontre mirando algunos de sus diseños  mas clásicos y recientes. Esto llevaba a la gente a un cuarto que mostraba increíbles zapatos en un gran piano circular. Los espejos al rededor de este dejaron que vea el reflejo de mi cara sorprendida, y de repente me sentí insegura...no pude evitar sentirme común parada al lado de esas obras de arte.

I walked from a room that briefly tells the designer’s biography to a mini cinema showing (the cringiest film ever) Loubi’s Angels and then discover a room that looks like the designer’s archives-a representation of his atelier. Filled with drawings and objects he has brought back from his travels. In the corner, two trapeze bars could be seen hanging from the high sealing, where Loubi practices when he has time. 

I left the atelier behind, to get lost in the shadows and obscurity of the fetish room, which is probably one of the things that amazed me the most at the exhibition. It displays shoes with metal spikes and heels so high that the shoe was elevated to a 180 degree angle (completely vertical). This room shows twisted but provocative shoes which have been “made for sex”. The atmosphere of it matches the dark décor of the photographs showing a couple of pale cabaret dancers moving effortlessly in the glooms.  

The exhibition is designed so you can walk out of the darkness into an amazingly decorated burlesque full of shoes made with fishnet, spikes, leather, animal skins and lace.

Caminé a través de un cuarto que contenía una breve biografía del diseñador y por un pequeño cine en el que mostraban una película llamada Los Angeles de Loubi, para luego encontrarme en el atelier del diseñador. Lleno de dibujos y objetos que trajo de sus viajes por el mundo. En la esquina, vi dos trapecios colgando del alto techo, en el que Loubi practica cuando tiene tiempo.

Dejé atrás el atelier para perderme en las sombras y la oscuridad del cuarto fetiche, que probablemente es una de las cosas que mas me sorprendieron en la exhibición. Muestra zapatos con clavos de hierro y tacos tan altos que hacían que los zapatos esten completamente verticales. Este cuarto muestra zapatos raros pero provocativos que están hechos "para tener sexo". La atmósfera muestra un parecido con la decoración obscura de las fotografías en las paredes que muestran un par de bailarinas de Cabaret bailando sin esforzarse en las sombras. 

La exhibición está diseñada para que puedas salir de la oscuridad a un burlesque decorado espectacularmente, lleno de zapatos hechos con red, clavos, cuero, piel de animales y encaje.

 I found myself in a state of hallucination and blindness caused by the extravagant and spectacular shoes designed by the French designer.

I literally wanted to take all of them home. Luckily that didn’t fit me; otherwise I would have done it.

Me di cuenta que estaba alucinando y enseguecida por la extravagancia de los zapatos hechos por el diseñador francés.

Quería llevarme todos los zapatos a casa. Por suerte no me entraban, si no lo hubiese hecho.

My favourite part was the exquisite finale: the holographic performance featuring Dita Von Teese at the centre of the exhibition. It really made people experience the greatness of a luxurious French Cabaret. I couldn’t help but fall in love with the performance and the colossal hologram of a blindingly gorgeous Loubi shoe in the middle of the stage. As soon as they show was over, I looked around and realized that there was a massive croud behind me and I was right in the first row. 

Mi parte preferida fue el exquisito final: el holograma de Dita Von Teese en el medio del salón, que hizo que la gente se sienta parte de un lujoso Cabaret francés. No pude evitar enamorarme con el acto y el holograma enorme de un zapato brillante de Loubi en el medio del escenario. En cuanto el show terminó, miré a mi al rededor y me di cuenta que había un montón de gente atrás mio y yo estaba en primera fila. 

 I thought I liked Christian Louboutin before Friday, but now I know…this is true love.
